Overview
WHO Priority Goup
- Candida auris
- Candida albicans
- Cryptococcus neoformans
- Aspergillus fumigatus
As many as 53% of patients die from invasive infections brought on by C auris, which is easily transmissible in medical facilities and sometimes resistant to all kinds of antifungal drugs.
Candida albicans, common in the mouth, throat, gut, vagina, and skin but can cause severe disease when it invades other tissue, is another Candida species given great attention.
Aspergillus fumigatus, an environmental mold that can cause severe lung infections and poses a particular risk to people with cystic fibrosis, the flu, and COVID-19, and Cryptococcus neoformans, a pathogenic yeast that lives in the environment and can cause severe infections after being inhaled, are also included in the critical priority group.
