Men’s Wheelchair and Bikini divisions were featured in Texas.

The 2024 Dallas Pro was held on Saturday, June 15, 2024, in Dallas, TX. It featured the IFBB Pro League’s Bikini and Men’s Wheelchair divisions. 2024 Olympia Weekend qualifications were at stake for the 14 who posed on stage.

James Berger (Men’s Wheelchair) and Kate Carroll (Bikini) were the winners. They qualified for their respective division’s contest at the 2024 Olympia in Las Vegas, NV, on Oct. 10-13, 2024.

Men’s Wheelchair Winner — James Berger

This was Berger’s 2024 season debut and his first pro win. The second-year pro is set to compete in the 2024 Wheelchair Olympia, where he will debut on that stage.

Berger is the eighth athlete to qualify for the 2024 Wheelchair Olympia this season. Kyle Roberts finished in second place, and Bryan Williams took bronze.

Bikini Division Winner — Kate Carroll

Ashley Kaltwasser’s quest for 50 wins hit a roadblock at this contest, as she finished as the runner-up to Kate Carroll in this contest. Carroll scored the win and 2024 Bikini Olympia qualification in what many would consider an upset. This was Carroll’s first pro victory of her rookie season, a massive accomplishment.

Kaltwasser is still Olympia-qualified thanks to her three past Olympia wins, top three finish at the 2023 Bikini Olympia, and her four wins this season alone. She has 47 pro wins to date. Only one point separated Kaltwasser and third-place finisher Reyna Perez Mecalco. 

Other Notes

The next Men’s Wheelchair event will be the 2024 European Championships in London, England, on the weekend of Sept. 14-15, 2024. It will be the final 2024 Olympia qualifying event for that division.

Esmeralda Diaz Wins 2024 Southern California Championships Pro

Diaz is eligible for the 2024 Wellness Olympia.

Esmeralda Diaz has won the 2024 Southern California Championships Pro Wellness division show. The contest, which featured nine pros, was held in San Diego, CA, on Saturday, June 15, 2024.

Kelly Purcell finished as the runner-up, and Julia Mello rounded out the top three. The final standings are below:

Winner — Esmaralda Diaz

Diaz was coming off a fifth-place finish at the 2024 Toronto Pro Supershow on June 8, 2024, in Toronto, ON, Canada. This was just her second pro show and her first pro win. She is qualified for the 2024 Wellness Olympia in Las Vegas, NV, on Oct. 10-13, 2024.

Diaz now has the option to stay home and prepare for the Olympia, or she can continue competing and prevent other athletes from qualifying for the Olympia. A future pro show win in 2024 would block the Olympia qualification from being awarded.

Second Place — Kelly Purcell

Purcell was also competing in her second show of 2024. She was previously 11th at the 2024 New York Pro. Purcell had previously competed in the 2022 Wellness Olympia but failed to make the top 15. She must win a show before Sept. 15, 2024, to return to the Olympia stage.

Third Place — Julia Mello

This was Julia Mello’s first pro show, and she scored a top-three finish. The judges scored the top three the same way. The head judge for this contest was Tamer El Guindy.

Other Notes

This weekend, a second Wellness show occurred: the 2024 Empro Classic Pro in Alicante, Spain. Leonida Ciobu emerged victorious to qualify for the 2024 Wellness Olympia.

Two Wellness shows are scheduled for June 22-23, 2024. The Tanji Johnson Pro will take place in Tacoma, WA, and the Flex Weekend Pro will be held in Milan, Italy.

IFBB Pro League Bodybuilder Douglas Fruchey Has Passed Away at 36

IFBB Pro League Men’s Open bodybuilder Douglas Fruchey has died. He was 36 years old. Fruchey’s death was confirmed by his wife, Carli, and retired bodybuilder Brad Row in two separate Instagram posts. Rowe’s post can be seen below:

“Doug was a client, a peer, and a friend for almost a decade. He was a caring and humble human,” said Row. “Always seeking knowledge, always sharing his whenever he could, and always genuinely interested in how you were doing.”

Rowe shared that Fruchey had previously been reported missing. Multiple sources have shared that his body was found in his California apartment on June 15, 2024. No official time or cause of death has been confirmed by authorities, and there is no word on arrangements or services at the time of this article’s publication.

Daniel Fruchey‘s Competitive Career

According to NPC News Online, Fruchey started competing in the amateur ranks in 2017. He earned his pro card at the 2020 NPC Worldwide Amateur Olympia in Orlando, FL. He competed in the pro ranks from 2021 to 2022. He did not compete in the 2023 season; his 2024 season status was unknown. His contest history is shown below:

Fruchey also worked as an actor. His IMDB page credits him with roles in Babylon, Oliver Sacks: His Own Life, and Soft White Underbelly.

Fruchey was best known in the fitness industry through his work, sharing his knowledge on social media and YouTube, and frequently being featured on Mike O’Hearn’s channel as one of his training partners. O’Hearn shared comments about Fruchey in his own post:

“To my training partner of the last five years. You have been a blast, big Douglas Fruchey,” said O’Hearn. “From our crazy 3 a.m. workouts to our two-a-days getting ready for the movie Divinity. Thanks for the push and amazing deep conversations and discussions. Life is short; tomorrow is promised to no man.”

Fruchey is survived by his wife, Carli Fruchey, a Women’s Physique Pro. BarBend will continue to provide updates on this story as they become available.

Threshold Run: What Is It, When To Do It, and How To Optimize It

“Threshold” is likely a term you’re familiar with if you have a running coach or are an advanced runner. If that’s not you…welcome to the mix. The short story? Threshold training is an important component of improving cardio fitness, and it’s pleasantly tough.

If the terminology is confusing (we get a little lost in the mix sometimes, too), I’ve put together this guide to threshold runs. To give you as much guidance as possible, I tapped experts Will Baldwin, a USATF- and VDOT-certified run coach, and James Rodgers, an endurance coach and competitive runner

What Is a Threshold Run?

Brace yourself for a little (or a lot) of science. When defining a “threshold run,” we need to understand the various processes that occur in the body while running and how they relate to perceived effort levels. 

Defining Threshold: Aerobic, Anaerobic, and Functional, Oh My! 

If you’ve been researching threshold running, you’ve probably come across many different terms that include the word “threshold.” Here are common terms used in the running world: 


Aerobic Threshold

Your aerobic threshold represents an effort level that you can maintain comfortably for hours. It’s a light- to low-moderate effort. Scientifically speaking, the aerobic threshold is the point at which the level of lactate in your body first starts to rise above resting levels and anaerobic metabolism pathways begin to assist with energy production. (1)

In other words, the aerobic threshold is your body’s tipping point. You’re flirting with the line between aerobic metabolism and anaerobic metabolism, but aerobic metabolism remains dominant—your body is still running on fats via oxygen metabolism. 

AeT usually occurs at about 65 to 70 percent of your max heart rate, or heart rate zone 2. 


Anaerobic and Lactate Threshold

The anaerobic threshold and lactate threshold are by and large the same thing. These terms describe the point at which lactate accumulation is beyond your body’s capabilities to clear it and your body switches over to primarily anaerobic metabolism instead of aerobic metabolism. This is also when fuel sources switch: Your body begins to tap into glycogen (carbohydrate) stores rather than rely on fatty acids. (2)

The important difference between AnT and LT is that AnT is found by measuring oxygen consumption levels, while LT is found by measuring blood lactate levels:

  • When exercising at anaerobic threshold, your body begins to use more carbohydrate (glycogen) as fuel, as opposed to fats via oxidation. (3)
  • Lactate accumulates in the muscle and is recycled for energy production, eventually “spilling over” into the bloodstream. Lactate threshold is reached when the athlete’s blood lactate volume reaches 4 mmol (4 millimoles per hour). (4)

Runners use anaerobic threshold as a predictor of race times because the pace that you can sustain at—or just below—your AnT/LT is the pace you can sustain for races. It typically occurs at about 80 to 90 percent of your max heart rate (also known as heart rate zone 4). (5)


Ventilatory Threshold I and Ventilatory Threshold II

VT is another way of measuring effort and energy metabolism. VT1 is the first point at which the athlete’s breathing becomes labored. It is associated with the aerobic threshold. (6)

VT2 is associated with the anaerobic and lactate thresholds; it refers to the point at which the athlete cannot maintain rhythmic breathing and there is a significant breakdown in controlled breathing patterns. At this point, the athlete is under significant physiological stress. (6)


Functional Threshold

Finally, your functional threshold pace (FTP) is typically defined as the maximum effort you can sustain for one hour. This is less of a scientific definition than a practical concept. To be clear, anaerobic threshold and functional threshold are not the same, though they are related. (7)

What Is Lactate and the Lactate Threshold?

When we talk about threshold running, the underlying understanding is usually that we’re talking about running at your lactate/anaerobic threshold. Let’s expand on the definition we covered above. 

Lactate is a byproduct of glucose metabolism. Your body can recycle it to use for energy; it can also convert it into pyruvate, another metabolite that can provide energy for exercise. (8)

That may sound like mumble-jumble (and, really, you don’t need to remember all of those words), but the important thing to know is that when we run hard, muscles move around lactate and lactic acid to help reduce the impact of fatigue,says Baldwin. 

This is a process known as lactate shuttling. “When we do a properly calibrated threshold run, our body can spend more time carrying out that process and eventually get more efficient at it,” he says. Importantly, “Lactate helps quell the fatiguing process, so we need just the right amount present,” Baldwin adds.

“If we run harder than our anaerobic threshold zone, there will be too much lactate present in our blood, and we won’t be able to clear out the fatigue fast enough,” he says. That’s when it starts to feel like your body is screaming at you to slow down or stop. 

But by remaining in the anaerobic threshold zone, you’re running as hard as you can while clearing out most of the fatigue-causing metabolites, Baldwin explains. Thus, training in this zone eventually lends itself to the adaptation that all runners want: running faster for longer periods of time. (9)

Aerobic Threshold Run Vs. Anaerobic Threshold Run 

So, if running at aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold ultimately elevates performance, why would we need to do both?

Put simply, we do both because they train different energy pathways in your body, and as an athlete, it’s ideal for all energy pathways to operate at their maximum potential. That said, depending on your current fitness, your goals, and any events you may be training for, you might not need to do both. 

For instance, a new runner should develop their aerobic capacity before adding anaerobic threshold training into their programming. Similarly, an athlete who needs to substantially improve endurance for long-distance events will be well-served by a training block that focuses on developing aerobic metabolism and later adding anaerobic threshold training back into their plan.

It may feel counterintuitive that you should run at the lower threshold effort to improve half-marathon and marathon race times. However, the concept is the same as that of zone 2 training: Running slower and maintaining a lower heart rate improves your body’s capability to use fats as fuel via oxidation—a critical component of long-distance racing. This is called improving your aerobic base. (10)

Utilizing higher-effort threshold work does improve your VO2 max and other markers of running performance, but lower-intensity training is important for long-term adaptation. (10)

Threshold Run Vs. Tempo Run

The terms “threshold run” and “tempo run” are sometimes used interchangeably. However, they’re not truly one and the same. Here’s an easy way to remember the difference: 

All tempo runs are threshold runs, but not all threshold runs are tempo runs. 

Basically, a tempo run is just one type of a threshold run. Specifically, tempo running refers to maintaining your near-threshold pace for a longer period, usually two or more miles. Or, you can go by time rather than distance. For example, a workout plan may tell you to “run at near-threshold pace for 45 minutes.” 

The key to a good tempo run is moving at a pace slightly beneath your true anaerobic threshold. For instance, if your threshold pace is 10 minutes per mile, you would perform your tempo run at a pace of 10:15 to 10:30 per mile, depending on how far you’re going. 

Other popular threshold workout formats include: 

  • 3 to 5 sets: run 1 mile at threshold pace; walk or jog for 90 seconds between sets
  • 2 to 3 sets: run 20 minutes at 5K pace; walk or jog for 5 minutes between sets
  • 3 to 4 sets: run 2K at 10K race pace; walk or jog for 3 minutes between sets

Always warm up and cool down at a low-intensity pace when performing threshold runs. 

How to Do an Anaerobic Threshold Run

Ready to implement threshold training? Here are some tips on how to get started. 

First, Know When You’re Ready for a Threshold Run

As Baldwin explains, new runners can skip threshold running workouts for a while. Training at lower intensities for a few weeks is sufficient for improving your fitness level as a new runner. You may be ready to implement a threshold run after building an aerobic base for four to six weeks

This also applies for distance runners who need to improve their aerobic base. They’ll want to prioritize lower-intensity training—typically in zone 2, or 60 to 70 percent of your max heart rate—to improve aerobic capacity. 

Determine Your Threshold Pace

There are a few ways to find or estimate your threshold pace.

Lab Testing

The most accurate method for determining your pace is to visit a sport science lab and undergo threshold testing, according to Rodgers. “You will then be provided with detailed information about your paces, heart rate zones, and current threshold level,” he says.

Max Heart Rate

Heading to a lab isn’t an option for everyone. It’s expensive, and such labs may not be available in your area. If you can’t get lab testing done, there are other ways to estimate your threshold pace. 

One simple way, Rodgers says, is to use a percentage of your maximum heart rate. A common method is to use the pace at which you’re reaching 80 to 90 percent of your heart rate max (HRmax). For example, a 35-year-old with a max heart rate of 185 (220 minus age) would want to keep their heart rate below 166 for threshold running (166 is about 90 percent of 185).

“However, be aware this is very much an estimate, and you are better off underestimating your threshold heart rate than overreaching and risking being above your threshold,” Rodgers says. 

Functional Threshold Pace

This is where your FTP comes in. Alternatively to the above two options, you can estimate the pace you could sustain for one hour, Rodgers says. “This is then the pace you should look to stay at or just under during your threshold running,” he says. “However, do take into account the weather and terrain you are running on. This is where another metric, such as heart rate, is useful.”

Considerations

Wind, heat, hills, and other environmental factors can affect your threshold pace for any given day. For instance, if it’s particularly hot outside, the effort required to run at the determined pace will be higher. Thus, your heart rate at that pace will be higher, pushing you out of your threshold zone. This is why using heart rate training is advantageous; we’re not performing our daily training in labs under optimal conditions, after all!

Plan Your Route and Aim for Ideal Conditions

To train at your true threshold run pace, your route should be flat and paved or hard-packed. Additionally, try to avoid running at hotter points in the day if training during the summer. If you have access to a treadmill, that can simulate ideal conditions.

Of course, it won’t always be possible to run on perfectly flat ground in perfect weather with no headwinds, so try not to stress too much if you encounter some unfavorable conditions. 

Remember That It’s Not a Time Trial

Rodgers encourages runners to lose the mindset that every threshold run is a time trial—it isn’t. 

“One of the most common mistakes that runners of all abilities make is running their threshold runs too hard, sometimes treating them as a time trial,” Rodgers says. “This defeats the purpose of the threshold run, and you no longer get the intended benefit, as you are likely to exceed your lactic threshold and the purpose of the workout is lost.”

How to Program Anaerobic Threshold Runs

The ideal frequency and volume of threshold runs depend largely on your current fitness and your primary sport. Here’s an overview of how to program threshold runs for different types of athletes.

For Beginners 

Baldwin encourages new runners to hold off on lactate threshold training until they’ve increased their running volume to a few comfortable aerobic runs per week. 

“You don’t necessarily need a lot of this type of work until you’ve been running regularly for a few weeks,” he says. “If you’re just starting up jogging, easy runs at a very low effort will be more than enough training load to improve from. I’d wait until you’ve been running for a month at least three times a week before I’d start assigning the work.”

At that point, you’d ideally start with one anaerobic threshold run per week, gradually building up volume over time. To increase volume, you can increase the length of your once-per-week LT run (e.g., do four sets intervals instead of three), add a second LT run, or both. 

For Strength Athletes

For someone who’s primarily a strength athlete, Baldwin says he would program just one threshold session a week, and prioritize it as a run alone—not a combined workout. 

“It’s really easy to run too hard and get outside our threshold zone, so we must be particular about how it’s performed,” he says. “It’s best to do it on flatter terrain where we can really monitor our effort and heart rate. Depending on the athlete, I might even use this as our longest run of the week.”

The reason for this, Baldwin explains, is that strength athletes receive other hard stimuli throughout the week, and overdoing threshold training could create an imbalance in their training profile. 

Additionally, strength athletes may want to perform threshold runs on a treadmill to control pacing, says Rodgers. Because they may be less experienced with maintaining pace and effort outdoors, Rodgers says that treadmill threshold runs can prevent them from creeping up above their true lactate threshold pace. 

For Hybrid Athletes

A hybrid athlete is someone who trains for both strength and endurance. Some hybrid athletes train exclusively for those two—such as powerlifting and marathon running—while others also include other elements of fitness, like calisthenics and plyometrics. Examples of hybrid fitness include CrossFit and Hyrox racing.

For these types of athletes, performing at least one threshold run per week is ideal, says Rodgers. However, hybrid athletes can include more threshold training in their weekly programming by including threshold pace runs with other training elements, he adds. 

Here are some examples:

  • 30-minute run at threshold pace, then a 12-minute EMOM of 30 seconds max rep deadlifts @ 65% 1RM (even minutes) and 30 seconds max rep bench press @ 65% 1RM (odd minutes).
  • 3 rounds: 1-kilometer run at threshold pace, 5-minute AMRAP of 15 barbell thrusters (95/65 pounds) and 15 pull-ups.

For Endurance Athletes

Threshold runs are extremely important for endurance athletes. Baldwin says endurance athletes, particularly those following a workout program for a specific upcoming event, should be engaging in threshold interval training at least two times per week

“It’s a stimulus we want to touch on often,” he says. An exception to this is athletes who need to focus on improving their aerobic base, in which case they can benefit from sticking to lower-intensity work for a training block. 

It’s important to also increase the total volume of threshold work before increasing the pace, Baldwin says. 

He offers a training example for a “fairly fit athlete who has been running regularly.”

  • 15-minute slow, easy warmup in zone 1 and low zone 2 
  • Short walk break 
  • Three 1-kilometer reps with 90-second walking recovery 
  • Over the course of the training block, increase the volume to 10 sets of 1 kilometer

At the end of the training block, the athlete would retest and recalculate their threshold pace. They’d then use the new, faster pace, beginning with three 1-kilometer reps.

Benefits of Threshold Runs

Training at anaerobic threshold paces comes with big benefits for your fitness and performance. The key purpose of a threshold run is to improve your lactate threshold, Rodgers says. 

“This, in turn, helps you to run at faster paces without experiencing excessive lactate buildup in your body,” he explains. “Lactate is produced when you exercise at high intensity, eventually slowing you down. The lactate threshold is the point at which your body starts to produce more lactate than it can clear.”

By running at or just under your lactate threshold, you can gradually increase it and run at faster paces before reaching it. The result: run faster for longer

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate running threshold?

The best way to calculate your running threshold is to undergo various physiological tests at a sport science lab. In such a setting, you’d run on a treadmill while sport scientists measure factors like oxygen consumption, breathing patterns, heart rate, and blood lactate levels. This will provide you with the most accurate picture of your current baseline performance.

You can estimate your threshold pace by using your functional threshold pace (the maximum effort you can run at for 60 minutes) or by using your heart rate (running at about 80 to 90 percent of your maximum heart rate). 

How long should threshold intervals be?

Threshold intervals can be programmed in distance or in time. They can be as short as one mile or extend for several miles, depending on the percentage of threshold you’re working at and the length of the recovery interval. 

For instance, your plan may call for a six-mile run at tempo pace (five to 10 percent below threshold) or four sets of one-mile runs at 105 to 110 percent of threshold effort. Or, your plan may say something like: 10-minute zone 2 warmup, 20-minute run at threshold pace, and a 10-minute cooldown in zone 1-2.

What is the heart rate zone for the threshold run?

Lactate threshold occurs at about 80 to 90 percent of the athlete’s maximum heart rate. Well-trained runners can typically run at higher percentages for longer. 

How often should I incorporate threshold runs into my training schedule?

Most coaches program threshold running at least once per week, but often more, depending on experience level and current fitness. “An elite athlete may complete four threshold-based workouts in a week, often using the threshold interval approach,” Rodgers says.

“Double-threshold days have become increasingly popular for elite-level athletes due to the recent success of high-profile athletes using this method. However, remember that they are often world-class athletes and have built this volume up over time.”

A beginner, he says, will still benefit from a threshold-based workout once a week or every ten days.

Six-time Mr. Olympia champion Dorian Yates attributed much of his bodybuilding achievements to his distinctive training approach. “The Shadow” was famous for his high-intensity training regimen, dubbed Blood & Guts. This training modality emphasized fewer sets trained to failure and beyond, demanding muscle endurance and strength.

On June 12, 2024, “Hypertrophy Coach” Joe Bennett reviewed Yates’ Blood & Guts workout on his YouTube channel. Bennett meticulously analyzed the movement and mechanics the English bodybuilder employed during his intense shoulder and triceps training, shedding light on the rigorous demands of Yates’ training philosophy. Yates’ Approach to Training

Bennett admires Yates’s approach to training, which stayed from the common training practices of the time toward different methods more personalized for how Yates’ body responded.

Yates paired shoulder and back training, which may benefit some but might overly fatigue others. Training shoulders effectively after an intense back session is no small feat. Bennett recommends discovering the most efficient personal training strategy over time and consistently adhering to it.

Athletes with well-balanced deltoids can initiate their training regime with an overhead press, similar to the technique used by Yates. However, years of experience made Bennett realize that this approach disproportionately developed his front deltoids, lacking the desirable aesthetic roundness of the shoulders.

To address this imbalance, Bennett recommends beginning workouts with rear delt work and lateral raises to achieve a more balanced physique.

Dorian Yates’ Shoulder Workout

Below are Bennett’s observational notes of Yates’s shoulder training: 

Smith Machine Overhead Press

  1. Select the overhead press variation that feels most natural. This variation allows the shoulders to move through their full range of motion, extending beyond 90 degrees. Move through the lengthened and mid-range positions.
  2. Rather than standing movements, perform the overhead press seated. Use a back pad to enable lifting heavier weights during presses, as it will help stabilize the torse so you can focus on lifting rather than stabilizing.
  3. The Smith machine offers superior stability compared to free weights for overhead presses. However, skill is a critical factor.
  4. Maintain a steady and controlled pace, ensuring forceful contractions and deliberate and powerful movements on the ascent.

“Stability, how well someone executes a motion, and how much energy they expend keeping it stable is a skill,” said Bennett. “Someone very, very skilled might be able to lift almost the exact same weight on a bar that they could on a Smith because they’re so coordinated and have minimal expenditure actually keeping things in track.”

Dumbbell Lateral Raise

  1. Ensure the deltoids are fully engaged. Adopting a seated position for lateral raises, similar to the technique used by Yates, can minimize momentum and concentrate the effort on the targeted muscles.
  2. Eliminating body movement during heavy lifting is unrealistic. Instead, focus on achieving balance and minimizing the range of motion to avoid impacting the mechanics.
  3. The primary challenge with dumbbell lateral raises lies in the minimal joint torque experienced at the starting position. This shortened position doesn’t give the delts much stimulus for growth. 

Cable Lateral Raise

  1. Bennett argues this variation is more efficient due to its mechanics, which overload the bottom and mid ranges, making it more effective for muscle hypertrophy.
  2. As Yates recommends, performing these bilaterally rather than unilaterally might be more beneficial for beginners due to improved balance and stability. Executing the exercise lying down could enhance the precision and control of the movement.

Dumbbell Shrugs

  1. Maintaining a fixed posture can enhance the scapula’s comfort and range of motion. However, that might restrict the range for larger athletes like Yates. As Yates demonstrates, a slight bend in the elbows may engage other muscles, but their involvement is minimal compared to the benefit gained by the increase in range of motion.
  2. Individuals experiencing elbow problems can use a trap bar or cable as an alternative.
  3. Dumbbell shrugs target the upper trapezius muscles, often regarded as part of the shoulders due to their contribution to the shoulders’ rounded appearance.

  1. Achieving full elbow flexion is crucial.
  2. Yates’ elbows flare out, which might feel harsh on the elbows.
  3. Performing this routine on a weight bench can enhance isolation.
  4. Cable crossover variations offer a more elbow-friendly option, maintaining the same joint angles and load patterns as this exercise.

Reverse Grip Extension

The machine has a 14.3lb flywheel — lighter than the industry-standard 16lbs — but our tester notes it feels sturdy nonetheless. “Unless you’re really jostling it side to side, this machine feels stable and stays in place,” they said. The 10 levels of magnetic resistance are also more limited than competitor machines on this list, but should be plenty challenging enough (and maybe even too challenging); many reviewers, including experienced exercisers, note that they aren’t able to progress past level three. The stride length measures 18 inches, which is in the golden range for ellipticals, and excellent for a budget pick.

It has plenty of other little conveniences that make for a comfy workout experience, including cushioned handles, multiple water bottle holders, storage areas for headphones or other small items, a USB port, a headphone output, and even Bluetooth connectivity. “The Bluetooth works great and when you’re not using it, the sound coming out of the speakers is quite clear,” our expert tester said. Not only will you save money on the machine (going for $1,000 and $500 cheaper than the aforementioned models), but because the machine doesn’t have an integrated screen to display the iFIT content, you’ll be paying $15 per month for a subscription instead of $39 per month — saving you way more money in the long run. The iFIT capability is why our expert tester, a CrossFit Level-1 trainer, gave the machine 5 out of 5 for dynamic programming: “iFIT is excellent if you want challenging, diverse, and interactive workout programming,” they said.

Though you won’t be able to stream iFIT on the ProForm Carbon EL screen, you’ll still get one of the platform’s coolest connected-equipment features: SmartAdjust. The elliptical will automatically change the magnetic resistance to match the instructor’s cueing or the virtual terrain you’re striding through. (As for resistance, by the way, there are 18 levels — above the industry standard of 12.) 

It’s like buying one of ProForm’s fancier models, just saving money by bringing your own screen. Considering you probably already own plenty of those, it’s a great way to save money while still getting to stream iFIT workouts via your phone, tablet, or TV. The machine’s display is pretty basic, with Bluetooth compatibility and dual speakers, though it shows only basic stats like the time and distance.

As for the hardware? “It’s a sturdy machine. I didn’t notice any shifting while working out,” our tester said, giving the Carbon EL a 4 out of 5 for durability. It gets extra points for having an adjustable stride length and ramp, too. There are two different sets of handlebars — one fixed and one moving — plus, a water bottle holder and device shelf.

Those basics include 16 levels of electronic magnetic resistance, two sets of handlebars (one moving, one fixed), a media shelf, a water bottle holder, and a digital monitor that displays basic stats like calories, distance, time, and speed. 

Areas where it surpasses other budget ellipticals include the offering of 24 programmed workouts, heart rate sensors in the handles, and a 330lb weight capacity. “The industry standard is 300 pounds. Budget-friendly ellipticals are likely to have a lower weight capacity, while luxury options may have a weight capacity of 350 to 400 pounds,” says Amanda Capritto, certified personal trainer and our expert reviewer. This makes it one of the best ellipticals for heavy people on a budget.

On the flip side, this elliptical falls short of ideal for its lightweight 13.2lb flywheel (16+ is best) and 15.5” stride length (18-20” is recommended). The latter can make the machine somewhat uncomfortable for taller users, which is why our tester scored it 3.5 out of 5 for adjustability and ergonomics. 

Our tester found it to be quite durable — “I could stride forward, backward, and pick up the pace without too much movement from the machine. There were no weird noises or shaking,” our tester said —  though some reviewers on the Sunny Health & Fitness site report having issues with the assembly squeaking, or parts arriving broken. The 430 is Schwinn’s mid-tier elliptical, and it does a good job at offering some high-end features while remaining at an accessible price point. It has an excellent 20” stride length, above-standard 20lb flywheel, significantly more resistance levels than the industry standard of 12, a three-speed fan, and an LCD display that’s more interactive than any of the others on this list. That’s why our testers scored it a 4 out of 5 for value and features. The device shelf allows you to stream workout content on your own device without blocking the machine’s two displays, on which you can set up two user profiles, complete 22 programmed workouts, see your heart rate, and track stats like time, distance, and calories.

It’s a bit larger and heavier than other budget ellipticals, coming in at almost 6’ long, 5’3” tall, and nearly 170lbs — which is why it scored a 3 out of 5 for footprint and portability with our tester: “Taller athletes will need to be careful when working out on this machine in rooms with lower ceilings, and you could also have trouble moving it depending on your ceiling clearance,” they said. Taste

As a registered dietitian, I give Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides a rating of 4 out of 5. There are some big positives from this brand, but also a few drawbacks. 

The standard unflavored collagen by Vital Proteins contains hydrolyzed bovine derived from the hide of grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle. You get 20 grams of collagen per serving, which includes 19 amino acids. However, and importantly, it lacks one of the nine essential amino acids: tryptophan. 

You can also opt for the advanced form of this product, which contains all that the standard form has plus 100% of the daily value of vitamin C as well as 120 milligrams of hyaluronic acid per serving.

It’s vital, no pun intended, to know that this product should not replace the protein powder that you would have before or after a workout. It should also be noted that this wouldn’t be ideal if you’re looking for one of the best protein powders for weight loss.

We rate their “clean” formula a 4.5 out of 5 stars, but let’s dig into what’s on and underneath the wrapper.

Each bar provides 15 grams of protein from egg white protein and grass-fed whey protein isolate, both rich in essential amino acids. (7) If you’re curious about the difference between grass-fed whey vs. regular whey, grass-fed contains more nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A and E. However, these nutrients may be removed during processing, and research on whether the extra cost is justified is inconclusive.

The bar’s other natural ingredients—like peanut butter, dairy-free chocolate chips, dates, rolled oats, and coconut oil—contribute 16 grams of fat, 23 grams of carbs, 10 grams of sugar, and 3 grams of fiber. Sea salt adds 280 milligrams of sodium, which is worth noting if you monitor sodium intake.

The combination of these ingredients pleasantly surprised our tester, who noted they actually taste like peanut butter and chocolate. They raved about the “absolutely delicious” melty-worthy chocolate and appreciated that the dates balanced the slight dryness with a delightful chew, giving the bars a 4 out of 5 for flavor and texture.

Transparent Labs suggests enjoying the bars anytime for a healthy snack or meal but encourages consuming post-workout or when you need a whole-food meal but are short on time. As for taste, our tester tried the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor and felt the chocolate overpowered the peanut butter, which was mostly noticeable in the aftertaste. The bar’s density might be challenging for those with sensitive teeth. 

Thankfully, the bar softened when I could finally break off a chunk,” our tester notes, adding that the puffed crisps and chocolate chunks enhanced the mouthfeel. In our testing, Legion earned a 3 out of 5 for texture and a 3.5 out of 5 for taste.

The texture, though a little gritty, met expectations and wasn’t overbearing. “It’s a definitive reprieve from the traditional chewy or dry bars,” they said, giving it a perfect 5 for flavor and 4.5 out of 5 for texture.
